Erich Lessing est né à Vienne en 1923, fils dun dentiste et dune pianiste concertiste. En 1939, il est contraint de démigrer en Palestine. Sa mère restée à Vienne, mourra à Auschwitz. En Palestine, après avoir exercé divers métiers au sein de Kibbuz, il est engagé comme photographe de jardin denfant avant dêtre recruté comme photographe par larmée anglaise. Il rentre en 1947 en Autriche et devient correspondant de Associated Press. En 1951, il rejoint lagence Magnum. Il couvre alors la politique dans les pays dEurope de lEst où son reportage spectaculaire sur la Révolution Hongroise lui vaudra le American Editorsaward. Il fut aussi envoyé photographier plusieurs grands sommets politiques ainsi que la visite du Général de Gaulle à Alger. Après 1960, il se consacre à la photographie dart et dhistoire. Il publie une quarantaine de livres dont plusieurs ont été de grands succès : Les Voyages dUlysses, les Mythes grecs, lAncien Testament, les Voyages de Saint-Paul... Erich Lessing was born in1923 in Vienna, son of a dentist and a concert pianist. In 1939, Hitlers occupation of Austria forced him to emigrate to Israel. His mother remained in Vienna and died in Auschwitz. In Israel, Erich Lessing worked in several Kibbuzim. He returned to photography, a chidhood-hobby, working as a kindergarden photographer and later as photographer with the British Army. In 1947, he returned to Austria, worked as a photographer for the Associated Press and, in 1951, joined Magnum Photos. Working chiefly for Life, Paris Match, Picture Post, Epoca, and Quick Magazine, he documented political events in post-war Europe, particularly in the communist countries. He covered the Hungarian Revolution, seceral summit meetings and President Charles de Gaulles visit to Algeria. After 1960, he turned towards history. He published more than 40 books include such classics as the Travels of Ulysses, The Old Testament, the Italian Renaissance, the Greek Myths, the Travels of Saint Paul... The photographs, which will be exhibited are vintage. |
